I just got through with an assignment that had me designing my own production pieces, and it was honestly an eye opening experience. The two most important considerations in a production piece are time and materials. If you want a reasonably inexpensive production piece, you have to pare your time and materials down to the bare minimum. I continuously found myself coming up with an idea and then putting it aside because it was either too expensive or too time consuming. (Mind, some of the ideas weren't bad, and I haven't abandoned them. Any inspiration you can't use now, you'll need like crazy later.)
At the same time, the experience was very freeing. With most of my pieces, I work in a very tight, controlled manner. The time limit on these pieces meant that I didn't have time to work that way. I had to free myself up and trust my hand. The rather unexpected result is that these pieces have a little bit more humor to them, a little bit more playfulness.
